The 100-acre Quissett Campus remains the heart of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and serves as a model for how an academic campus can act as a living laboratory for education, research and recreation. From the onset, WHOI was willing to use their coastal, institutional landscape as a testing ground for innovative approaches to conventional site planning and design, and in return, our office was allowed to experiment with creative options. To date, we have worked with the Institution on over ten projects from planning to conception. The Master Plan work and successive projects are a demonstration of the Institution’s initiative to make their environmental ethic visible through the built landscape and our ability to respond with ecologically progressive, culturally appropriate, and financially sound solutions.
