Boston College
Chestnut Hill, MA
In 2010, STIMSON started working with Boston College on a landscape Master Plan for its Historic Middle Campus. This plan was implemented in a series of projects over the course of four years. The resulting three acres landscape of pathways and courtyards creates a coherent identity for the core of this historic campus. Our new plan eliminates vehicular traffic from the center of the campus, accommodates the college’s major student circulation artery which channels 10,000 students through middle campus, puts in place a series of sustainable initiatives, creates a canopy structure of large native trees, and provides spaces for major campus events as well as quiet contemplation. The new landscape also reestablishes key features of the 1909 plan which envisioned the entire campus as linked quadrangles forming a vast cathedral of trees to celebrate the Jesuit heritage of the College.
