Chilmark Residence
Martha's Vineyard, MA
Set high on the terminal moraine of Martha’s Vineyard, this 4-acre project emphasizes the unique quality of a glacial landscape providing sweeping ocean views to the South. Existing glacial erratics and mature trees are woven into a design, which employs a minimal number of walls and terraces to ground the house to the site. Close collaboration between the architect and landscape architect fostered a strong continuity of spatial organization and materiality between interior and exterior spaces, effectively blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. A strong interplay exists between the native landscape and the “man made” program of the design, which weave seamlessly through the spaces created by large existing trees and boulders. The pool, constructed into the hillside, provides the unique juxtaposition of water's edge with distant ocean views.
