Boldwater Farm
Edgartown, MA
Boldwater Farm is located on 30 acres adjacent to Great Salt Pond in Edgartown, on Martha’s Vineyard. The Master Plan includes the siting and design of the main house, garage, pool and gardens, pond, orchard, barn, outbuildings, caretaker house, guesthouse, and fields. The property is a low, flat outwash moraine and is windswept from the south shore of Katama. The site is entered from the north where an orchard enclosed by stone walls creates an arrival space. From here the landscape unfolds with glimpses to the barn, pond and newly planted fields which are being rotated with crops of rye and buckwheat. The barn and caretaker’s cottage will be built in the future. Beyond the fields, the drive winds through woods to the house. The house purposefully hugs the ground with a low profile and large overhangs within a canopy of stunted oaks. The garage, house, and master bedroom are configured to embrace a lawn to the south with views to Great Salt Pond. Here the stone arc acts as an armature connecting the pool, parking court, lawn, and the striped garden at the master bedroom.
