Saloni Chawla
Landscape Designer
Saloni Chawla received her Master degree in Landscape Architecture from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign where she won the IL Chapter ASLA Honor award in 2018, and a Merit award in 2017. She holds a Bachelor degree in Architecture from Uttar Pradesh Technical University. Working as an architect in Varanasi (one of the oldest living cities in the world) sparked her fascination with the complex relationship between cultural landscapes and people. She values landscape as a matrix binding society, culture, and ecology, and believes in thoughtful interpretation and analysis as prerequisites for resilient design solutions. As a Ryerson fellow at UIUC, Saloni traveled in Europe to research landscapes of pilgrimage. Her work is influenced by her upbringing and education in India, and this lens informs her understanding of the larger order that stems from cultural values and beliefs. Her other interests are wandering the streets identifying plants, reading, and writing.
