This is a big agricultural landscape located in the Chester Valley of PA. The owner came to us many years ago when her children were tiny, asking for ideas of how to create a series of outdoor rooms that extended their home life onto their land. She was unbelievably creative with a depth of vision and had already designed and built an ambitious grass maze. This eventually unfolded into a long term friendship that has spanned over a decade of holistic planning studies and design proposals evolving around a historic house, new house, kitchen garden, pool garden, courtyards, outbuildings, farm courts, paddocks and playfields. We were drawn to the enormous 60” caliper Sycamores and heritage Lindens that dot around the main house gardens like wolf trees and designed everything in respect to them. A structure of berms, allee, orchard and hedgerow plantings define edges between exterior spaces, creating a series of outdoor rooms for seasonal use. A perennial garden was inspired by the agrarian meadows and done in concert with Piet Oudolf. Water features animate the hillside between old and new houses. The project is on-going and it has been a special thing to see the children grow up in this landscape.
