The landscape for the new headquarters for IFAW takes cues from the natural processes that formed the Cape Cod peninsula while integrating the principles of sustainable brownfield redevelopment. The program includes a 40,000 sq. ft. building, outdoor gathering spaces and parking for 150 cars. The building is articulated as three interconnected structures that form a south facing courtyard dominated by a purposeful landform. The drumlin, as an elongated ridge, is evocative of the site’s glacial history and native landscape. Movement around and through the courtyard is perceived along arcing paths of shifting perspectives. The site cleanup, soil remediation, and landscape restoration introduced a native drought tolerant plant palette that has ecologically enhanced wildlife habitat and reconnected the site to the adjacent conservation lands. Overall, the culture and values of IFAW are expressed through the collaborative strategy between site design and architecture.
