Edward Marshall

Edward Marshall, FASLA
Principal

As a principal for 20 years at STIMSON, Edward Marshall has been the key design leader of many of the firm’s landmark projects. Edward’s craftsmanship and attention to detail at all stages of the design process, from concept design to construction documents and project implementation, reflect his belief that elegant and imaginative design infuses all levels of a project. His work has made a lasting imprint on our firm’s design approach. His leadership and mentoring have inspired staff over the years, fostering a collaborative design environment.

Edward’s work is rooted in a minimalist typology where the elements of the composition: grading, sight lines, planting and context do not overwhelm, but are choreographed allowing each element to be understood in the design of the site. His designs feature an economy of materials and a frugal simplicity of forms. His work achieves a level of refinement by employing a limited number of elements, resulting in an uncluttered landscape allows users to take ownership of the site.

Edward’s projects range in size and complexity from residential gardens to municipal parks and campus settings where continuity, scale, and sense of place shape the design. His landscapes become permanent, lasting foundations of the campuses and institutions he has shaped. His academic designs enrich the daily experiences of students by creating outdoor classrooms, terraces and gathering areas where friendships are made, learning is expanded and life’s goals are realized.

Edward has been the principal in charge for several projects such as Duke University Alumni Center, Case Western Reserve, Babson College Centennial Park, Sacred Heart University, Washington University Off-Campus Housing in St. Louis, MO, and Northeastern University International Village. He led these projects and more to spatial clarity and an increased user awareness that connects places while promoting community use.

Edward is committed to a collaborative design process in which ownership and authorship of the work is distributed throughout the ranks at STIMSON. He has worked tirelessly to build a mentoring culture within the studio where design ideas are explored and refined through drawings and modeling, balanced with project budgets and programs.

Edward has lectured at Landscape Design Symposium at Connecticut College and Morris Arboretum, the Centerbrook Architect Lecture Series and the UMass Fall 2017 Lecture series. Edward has also participated in design juries at the GSD and RISD.

A deep commitment to the social and cultural aspects of landscape architecture underpin Edward’s carefully crafted and thoughtfully designed landscapes. He believes that the landscape architect’s role is contributed to all aspects of the culture and community where he practices.

In 2018 he was elected a Fellow by the American Society of Landscape Architects for his outstanding achievements in the field of Landscape Architecture.
