This landscape and urban streetscape Comprehensive Plan provides a setting within Springfield’s historic district for five major bronze sculptures commemorating Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Granite pavement frames the Quadrangle and unifies the diverse architectural styles, while the simple and textural planting concept strikes a complimentary balance between sculpture, landscape and architecture. The whimsy and irreverence of the famous author is expressed in the Children’s Garden where Yertle the Turtle sits in a biomorphic granite pond surrounded by woodland and wetland plantings. Eastern white pines, reminiscent of Dr. Seuss’s ‘truffala’ trees, provide context for the garden. Boulders collected from a local quarry provide ample seating for groups of school children.
